Hello  ‍,

This month’s newsletter is only going to be about one thing: Veeam Backup and Replication 12 which became available to the public on February 14 2023.

Veeam Backup and Replication has been the clear leader in Business Continuity for years. With version 12, Veeam continues to demonstrate why they are the leaders:

  1. Avoid proprietary hardware lock‑in – Veeam is Hardware Agnostic
  2. Single Platform to protect ALL workloads (VMware Hyper-V, Nutanix, Amazon, Azure, Physical, Mac, Linux)
  3. Improved Immutable (Hardened) Repositories
  4. Numerous back-end improvements for management and maintenance

No matter what your Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, or Offsite Backup workloads might be, call me for the straight answers to some tough questions

1. Avoid proprietary hardware lock‑in

When a vendor wants to deploy their own appliance as part of a Business Continuity solution, there’s more at play than protecting your data. Intrinsically, that vendor is looking to capture your data and tie your Organization to their cloud and solutions.

Veeam takes a different approach by being completely hardware and Cloud agnostic, allowing you to facilitate Business Continuity for your Organization from anything to anywhere running on anything!

  • VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV
  • Physical Servers (Windows, Linux, AIX)
  • Windows Laptops and Workstations
  • MAC OS*
  • AWS, Azure, Google
  • o365 / Microsoft 365

*Some OS will not license for use on Cloud or Hypervisor systems

2. Single Platform to protect ALL workloads

Hypervisors

When talking about Virtual Machines on VMware, Hyper-V and Nutanix AHV, Veeam functions statelessly and interacts with the hypervisor using a dedicated proxy. This allows Veeam to create backups and replicas (DR) all day long without impacting the production systems. When I say statelessly, what I mean is that nothing needs to be installed on the VMs at all, because of the way Veeam is able to interact with the hypervisor, no matter which one you choose!

Physical systems

When Veeam protects physical systems, whether they are Windows, MAC, Linux, oracle or even AIX; Veeam functions like a traditional backup platform utilizing an agent which is installed on the system to be protected. From Laptops to huge SQL Servers, from MAC OS to the most esoteric Linux, Veeam is there to protect your workloads.

Best of all once a physical system has been protected by Veeam, it can be restored to your choice of Hypervisor or Cloud. That means that you can use Veeam to provide DR for your physical systems.

Big Cloud

Whether it’s Azure, AWS or Google, Veeam is ready to protect or repatriate your Big Cloud workloads.

Protect your data

While the Big Cloud provides a platform for you to create and deploy applications and services, the Big Cloud Shared Responsibility Model provides you still retain complete responsibility for your data, including its security and protection. Sure, you can add backup services and availability zones in the Big Cloud (for even MORE money!), but why not turn to a familiar and trusted solution such as Veeam to give you the choices you want!

Repatriate your data

More and more Organizations are discovering that the Big Cloud is just not suitable for every workload. From busted budgets and out-of-control costs, to security considerations; 2023 is the year of repatriation.

Veeam is the perfect tool to repatriate workloads from the Big Cloud, with native integrations for Azure, AWS and Google.

By Engaging VMsources to migrate select workloads back to your own hardware or our Secure Cloud, you can take back control from the Big Cloud.

3. Improved Immutable (Hardened) Repositories

Veeam introduced Immutable (Hardened) Repositories with version 11, to help Organizations protect themselves from Ransomware.

The Immutable (Hardened) Repositories use several features of Linux, single-use credentials, and the XFS filesystem to protect data from intentional (by Threat Actors) or unintentional (by mistake) modification.

If you ask me, however, the greatest strength of the Immutable (Hardened) Repositories is the very fact that they are not joined to Organizational Active Directory and, by design, exist on separate networks, with separate and highly restricted access procedures.

  • DO NOT place Immutable (Hardened) Repositories on VMFS/vSAN/Nutanix volumes
  • DO use strong passwords (13 characters or longer, randomized)
  • DO build your Linux minimally for your purposes
  • DO use isolated / special-purpose backup networks

All this combined makes an Immutable (Hardened) Repository difficult or impossible for Threat Actors to access.

One of the challenges with Immutable (Hardened) Repositories has been maintenance and upgrade. In version 11, SSH was always required for upgrade. In version 12, Veeam has added a “installer restricted mode” allowing the Veeam console to perform updates statelessly.

4. Veeam Back End Improvements

  • VeaMover backup move feature to migrate backups between repositories
  • Improved update/upgrade process
  • Permissions restore for Windows
  • Improved Security with possible MFA for Veeam Console
  • Improved network traffic management
  • Improved PowerShell
  • Support for PostgreSQL
